Make a wish fairies visit the House

Our friends at the Make-a-wish foundation visited Charles (or Kaia) Tareha at the House this month. He had wished for his own laptop and cellphone; and to meet his favourite Basketball player, NZ Breaker’s CJ Bruton.
Huddled around the reception area of RMH Grafton Mews, ideas over how to welcome the soon-to-arrive guests were jovially thrown around. The mixed group of parents, grandparents and staff shared a moment where adults know a brave young boy’s wish is going to be granted – one of life’s special moments indeed!

Meanwhile boy-of-the-hour was found casually playing on the common room computer with friends made in the House. Charles from the Bay of Plenty is 11 years old and is currently an oncology patient receiving treatment at Auckland’s Starship. He and his family have made various stays at the House which has kept his family close-by during treatments since mid 2010.

Upon the guests arriving and opening his gifts, Charles was humble, grateful and very sweet. A brand new iPad and ‘flash’ cellphone left him well and truly lost for words! Charles met up with CJ Bruton shortly afterwards and spent over an hour with him.

Ronald McDonald House Auckland’s CEO Wayne Howett also took a moment out of his day to share the joyful moment. And offered some technological advice! Mother Maia was overjoyed at her sons much deserved excitement. She commented that it’s hard at times with some peers not fully understanding what Charles has gone through, and to be able to appreciate how much he deserves to be a bit spoilt!

The RMHA team couldn’t agree more. It was lovely to share this moment with the Tareha family at the House - their home away from for as long as they need it.
